In February 2002, Donald Rumsfeld, the then US Secretary of State for Defence, stated at a Defence Department briefing: “There are known knowns. There are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we do not know we don't know.” Despite being initially criticised for seeming nonsensical, the quote has provided an almost paradoxical clarity to how scientific enquiry is conducted today. Beyond the Atom explores this quote and its relation to one of the most intriguing, and equally elusive, areas of science: quantum physics.
